The Lemosho Route is one of the best and most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its low traffic, excellent acclimatization, and high summit success rate. Starting on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, the route crosses the stunning Shira Plateau and passes through all climate zones, from alpine landscapes to the icy summit.

Arrive in Tanzania

You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your arranged hotel in Moshi town. Upon arrival, you will meet your mountain guide who will brief you on the upcoming trek and conduct a full equipment check to ensure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Any missing items can be rented on this day. You will spend the night at the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis, allowing time to rest and prepare for the climb.

Your day begins early with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a scenic two-hour drive from Moshi (910 m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2,100 m). Upon arrival, guides and porters will register the climb and organize all supplies and equipment. The trek then starts through lush rainforest, where you may encounter unique birdlife and colobus monkeys along the way. The day concludes at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m), where your tent will be fully set up with your personal belongings inside. Overnight at the camp.

Today is a longer trekking day as you bypass Shira I Camp and hike directly to Shira II Camp. After an early start around 7:00 am, the trail leads from Mti Mkubwa Camp through the heath and moorland zone, following the Shira Ridge. You will then enter a vast high-altitude desert plateau, where you will enjoy your first clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Shira II Camp (3,900 m).

The moorland landscape gradually gives way to the alpine desert as the trek ascends toward Lava Tower (4,600 m). After reaching this high point for acclimatization, you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,900 m). The descent takes approximately three hours and offers excellent photo opportunities, with stunning views of the Western Breach and the Barranco Wall. The campsite is set in a scenic valley below the Barranco Wall, where you can enjoy a memorable sunset before dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

This is another highlight of the trek. After breakfast, you will leave Barranco Camp and ascend the famous Barranco Wall (4,200 m), a rewarding scramble offering spectacular views near the Heim Glacier. The climb takes approximately four hours, leading to Karanga Camp (4,000 m), where you will stop for a hot lunch.

After lunch, the trek continues toward Barafu Camp, a journey of about three hours. Upon arrival, dinner will be served early, followed by rest and preparation for the summit attempt, which begins around midnight.

You will wake up around midnight (00:00) and enjoy a light snack of tea and cookies before beginning the summit climb. The ascent follows a steep scree trail for 4 to 5 hours, gaining significant altitude over a short distance. As dawn breaks, you will reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5,756 m), where the first rays of sunrise offer breathtaking views.

From Stella Point, it is approximately one hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After taking photos and celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch and a short rest. The trek then continues downhill to Mweka Camp (3,100 m), where you will have dinner and spend the night.

After breakfast, you will descend through the Mweka montane forest for approximately three hours to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed and climbing certificates are issued — a proud keepsake of your achievement. Your vehicle will then be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned hot shower. It’s time to relax and celebrate your successful climb!
